From the rich environment of the San Luis Valley stems two National Wildlife Refuges: Alamosa and Monte Vista. Established in 1962 as a haven for migratory animals, the Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge is a wetland gem near the heart and on the edge of the Valley. Complete with a stunning backdrop of the 14,345 ft. Mt. Blanca of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, this 11,169 acre refuge is a great way to view the regions abundant wildlife.

A two mile round trip hiking trail begins at the Visitor Center and follows the Rio Grande River. For those wanting a less active adventure, the Bluff Overlook on the eastern side of the refuge may be reached by car and provides a 3 1/2 mile auto tour.

Nestled in southern Colorado, North America's tallest dunes rise over 750 feet high against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This family-oriented educational aquaculture farm grows alligators and fish with an assortment of reptiles and native wildlife on-site. This is not a swimming site for people. The farm and rescue center always provokes conversation with the guests who visit it.
