The San Luis Express

National Wildlife Refuge Complex

From the rich environment of the San Luis Valley stems two National Wildlife Refuges: Alamosa and Monte Vista. Established in 1962 as a haven for migratory animals, the Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge is a wetland gem near the heart and on the edge of the Valley. Complete with a stunning backdrop of the 14,345 ft. Mt. Blanca of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, this 11,169 acre refuge is a great way to view the regions abundant wildlife.

A two mile round trip hiking trail begins at the Visitor Center and follows the Rio Grande River. For those wanting a less active adventure, the Bluff Overlook on the eastern side of the refuge may be reached by car and provides a 3 1/2 mile auto tour.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Nestled in southern Colorado, North America's tallest dunes rise over 750 feet high against the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This geologic wonderland, containing over 30 square miles of massive dunes, became a national monument in 1932 and a National Park in 2004. This is a "must see" when you visit the area.

Colorado Alligator Farm

This family-oriented educational aquaculture farm grows alligators and fish with an assortment of reptiles and native wildlife on-site. This is not a swimming site for people. The farm and rescue center always provokes conversation with the guests who visit it. The Alligator Farm is possible because the farm's ponds are naturally heated to 87º Fahrenheit by water from a 2000 ft. deep geothermal well.
